Brother Design, Make & Model Showcase

Ages: Year Levels 7 - 13                                                                                                                                                        

When: Thursday 22nd October, 9-9.30am practice, 10am competition begins.

Where: North End of Showcase Hall Marquee 

Fees: $5 Entry Fee                                                                                                                                                                               

Prizes: Sashes, certificates and cash will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings in each class, there will also be overall trophies awarded for the best upcycled garment, and the best garment made with natural fibres. The winning school overall will receive a special prize. And a special thank you to Brother for donating a sewing machine for this competition which will be awarded at the Show.

Prizes in the form of cash or gift vouchers to the value of: 1st - $50, 2nd - $35 & 3rd - $15, Senior Section will be 1st - $75, 2nd - $50 & 3rd - $25

Each entry will receive a complimentary ticket to attend the HB A&P Show.

The Brother Design, Make & Model Showcase encourages students to enter their wearable and handcrafted creations which they have skilfully designed and assembled over the year into various competition classes. Judging of the garment on its own will take place prior to the Show and the modelling of the garment will be judged during the catwalk. These scores will be collated and the entrant with the highest total marks in each class will win 1st place within that class. Come and get your strut on to show off your creative fashion sense.

Entries will need to be delivered on Friday 11th or Monday 14th of September 2026 between 9am-4pm to the HB A&P Society Office at the Foodeast Hub, 4 Hanui Road, Tomoana, Hastings 4172. Late entries will not be accepted. Construction Judging will take place prior to the Show on Tuesday 15th of September.

Closing date for the Handcraft class will be later & TBC with all designs to be brought into the Showgrounds Exhibition Hall on the 12th October for judging on the 13th October. (If it suits better these designs can still be dropped off at the same time as the other Design Make and Model designs (11th September and 14th September).

Please note: designs are to be the work of an individual not a group. The handmade section may have relevant classes for collaborative work.

If insufficient entries are received classes may be combined.

Classes:

  • Hand Craft Section - open to year levels 7-13 non-wearable items eg soft toy, wall hanging etc
  • Hoodie Section - open to year levels 7-13
  • Junior Section - open to year levels 7-10 any garment, it can be an outfit or a single piece
  • Intermediate Section - open to year level 11 any garment, it can be an outfit or a single piece
  • Senior Section - open to year levels 12 and 13 any garment, it can be an outfit or a single piece
  • Open Section - open to year levels 7-13 original design or use of fabric/materials. This can include wearable art. (You will need to complete a paragrah explaining/describing your concept/theme for your entry in this section)

Overall Awards:

  • Best Upcycled Garment - Any entry that uses at least 80% of pre-loved materials. Photos of the pre-loved materials used, before they have been manipulated, must accompany to be eligible. Awarded to the entry that, in the judges opinion, upcycles material in any of the following ways [Wide range of materials used, materials have been used innovatively and creatively, The outcome shows originality and/or the outcome has a wow factor].
  • Best Garment made with Natural Fibres (With a Preference for Wool) - The entry must be made of at least 80% of any natural fibre, or combination of natural fibres. Commercial fabric, knitting, crochet, macrame or a combination may be used.
  • Overall Winning School - Each 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing will incurr 3, 2 or 1 points respectivley, to their School's Score. The School with the highest total score at the end of the Showcase will be the crowned the overall winner.
  • Jenny Connor Memorial Award - this award recognizes the outfit and the way the individual wears and presents the garment, highlighting confidence and style for the occasion.

Judging Criteria:

  • Complexity of skills used
  • Quality of construction skills and overall finish
  • Choice of fabric for appropriate style
  • Overall presentation of garment
  • Originality and/or innovation in style, fabric and design

Entry Rules:
If for any reason the Hawke's Bay A&P Show must take a different form, judging will be reliant on photos provided in the entry form
Each item received for judging must have the entrant's name and class entered clearly attached
All entries must be hung on a suitable hanger that will last the duration of the Show. Entries that cannot be hung must be placed in an appropriate box, not in a bag
Entries can only be entered once. Garments must not have been entered into a previous DMM Showcase
The competition entry item must be modelled as the clear star of the ensemble i.e. the model must wear a plain black top (if bottom half garment is being showcased) or plain black leggings or similar (for top only garments)
A full ensemble can also be entered
The Judges reserve the right not to accept a garment for judging if they feel it is not up to a reasonable standard of workmanship, finish or cleanliness
Competitors must construct their garment independently and it may only be entered into one class
The garment must be entirely made by the competitor. No commercially made garments will be judged
All categories will be included dependent on numbers and at judge's discretion. The judges decision is final
Prizes may not be awarded if the judges do not feel entries are of a suitable standard in any class
If a competitor is unable to attend the Showcase, their garment may be modelled by someone else arranged by the competitor
, each entry must submit the design process, techniques they used and a full brief showing how the design interprets the theme it represents.
